OVERVIEW:

The Catechism of the Catholic Church summarizes the faith in four main parts: (1) Profession of Faith (Creed) explains the beliefs of the Church; (2) Celebration of the Christian Mystery covers the liturgy and sacraments; (3) Life in Christ teaches about moral living and commandments; and (4) Christian Prayer focuses on the Lord’s Prayer and the spiritual life. An easy way to remember this four-part designation is to remember that the Catechism presents how Catholics believe, worship, live, and pray.

PART I: WHAT WE BELIEVE

The Profession of Faith (Creed) in the Catechism explains what Catholics believe about God. The Creed also explains God’s plan for salvation. Indeed, the Catechism affirms faith in the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—as revealed in Scripture and Tradition. Additionally, it includes creation, incarnation, Jesus’s death, resurrection, ascension, Spirit’s guidance, forgiveness of sins, resurrection of the body, eternal life. Therefore, the Creed summarizes the core truths that form the foundation of Catholic faith.

PART II: HOW WE WORSHIP

The Liturgy and Sacraments section of the Catholic Catechism explains how the Church celebrates the mysteries of salvation. The seven sacraments communicate God’s grace. They are Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony. These sacraments sanctify the faithful. The liturgy, especially the Mass, is the central act of worship and a participation in Christ’s Paschal Mystery.

PART III: HOW WE LIVE

The Life in Christ section teaches how Catholics are called to live according to God’s commandments and the Beatitudes. It focuses on moral life, freedom, conscience, virtues, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It emphasizes loving God and neighbor, practicing the virtues, and avoiding sin to grow in holiness.

PART IV: HOW WE PRAY

The Catholic Catechism’s section on prayer explains that prayer is a vital relationship with God, rooted in faith, hope, and love. It covers the types of prayer—blessing, petition, intercession, thanksgiving, and praise. It highlights the sources of prayer in Scripture, the liturgy, and daily life, and emphasizes the importance of the Lord’s Prayer as a model. The text also discusses obstacles to prayer, the need for perseverance, and the Holy Spirit’s role in guiding and sustaining prayer.
